MAPS & PLANS: Enclosure Maps & Tithe MapsHere are three maps that refer to our piece of land. The first is a copy of part of the Enclosures Award of 1790. It was drawn up to show the allocations - shown by numbers - of the pieces of land that were being enclosed under Acts of Parliament. The portion in grey contains our house and land and is numbered 111. The piece of land includes Bridge Street property, the land on which Long Row was built, and of course Short Rows and "Shortlands".
I do not yet have a list of allocations for all the other numbers - this is a long-term project. However, on another map of the period I do know the owners of some pieces of land around Shortlands. See below.
This is a portion of Hicking's "Liberties of Belper" plan of 1805, amended in 1818. It is the earliest such plan that we have found. The pieces of land being bought for the Unitarian Chapel (the larger building in the centre) can plainly be seen. This assists in understanding the deeds of land purchase. A third plan, drawn from a small Estate Plan of 1829 (Title Map A. Referring To Schedule No. 1 D1564/2) is intended, as the text says, to show the "extent of the difficult purchases" which are marked "in purple". The dotted line denotes the purple marking. This plan shows the separate ownership of the plot of land called "Shortlands" (number 119) as opposed to the rest of Short Rows (number 120.)
