PEOPLE: The Taylors

The Taylor family are of interest interest because they crop up in a number of places in Hutfall Field, and because there are connections with the Gratians, the Stathams, the Slaters and perhaps also the Strutts. Like many of these families, the Taylors are "dissenters" and John Taylor was one of the first people in Belper to have his house licensed for worship.

There is an intriguing reference to the Taylor Croft in the following documents, and as soon as I can pinpoint its exact location, you will be the first to know!

Although the first deed, which mainly refers to properties far distant from Hutfall, appears to relate to families unconnected with this website, suddenly a reference to SHORTLANDS pops up, and we see that Hannah Taylor (maybe a daughter or widow of the Gratian/Taylor alliance) and the Slaters are involved somewhere here.

Lands in Eyes Field and Hutfallfield, Belper (Taylor - Robinson - Williams - Walker)

This is important because it is a clue to the whereabouts of the Taylor house in Belper. The terms Three Yates, Eye's Field, Bottom of the Eyes and other places reoccur in these deeds. Samuel and William Walker appear to have lands just off Market Street Lane, on the Western side (opposite our house, but this needs to be confirmed.) (These deeds have not yet been fully examined.)

[Formerly bundle in Box 14 Parcel 135]

(35). 1795 says

"and one dingle there adjoining to Taylor's house, one acre then in the possession of Samuel Walker."

1776

"Admittance of William Walker as heir of John Hutfall, one acre in Eye's Field."

(2). 3rd June 1762

Samuel Walker to Abraham Walker, recovery of old Hutfall Field and Three Loads?? in The Eyes - Three Yates/Gates/etc as above.
