PEOPLE: The Stathams
Of all the families mentioned on this website, the Stathams were (in the original conception of this website) the most interesting and vital to investigate, since they owned the very piece of land in Hutfall Field called "Shortlands" on which our former house still stands.

Derby Mercury Newspaper 1785: Advert of March 10th:
"To Be Sold by Auction" (This property, part of the lands and houses sold after the bankruptcy of Joseph Robinson, demonstrates a link with the Stathams Of Belper Laund, who are handling the sale.)
At Mr Humphrey Lane's house, the LOWER SWAN in Belper, in the County of Derby, on Thursday the 14th day of March 1785. At three o'clock in the afternoon, under such considerations as will then be produced.
All that Dwelling-house in Belper aforesaid, with a stable, cow-house, nailer's shop and about one acre of rich Land thereto belonging, now in the possession of Sarah Harrison and her Under-Tenants. Also, all that other Dwelling-House (unreadable) in Belper aforesaid, adjoining to the above, with the Blacksmith's shop therewith occipied, now in the Possession of Samuel Harrison.The premises are entitled to the Rights of Common upon that valuable and extensive Piece of Land called Belper Ward, and are conveniently situated for Trade near the Centre of the Town of Belper. For further particulars, apply in the mean Time to Mr. Joshua Statham of Belper Laund, or to Mr. Bower, Attorney, at his office in Chesterfield or Duffield.

Statham Land in Belper inc Huttfield (Statham - Strutt)
THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT PIECE AS REGARDS SHORTLANDS.
(1) At a small court, Duffield 3rd April 1788 before John Bower:
To this court cometh Isaac Statham of Shottle, yeoman, Harry Statham of the same place, yeoman, (son and customary heir of Phoebe Statham, heretofore Phoebe Street, deceased, late wife of the said Isaac Statham) and Ann his wife;
And surrender into the hands of the Lord of the Manor (the said Ann being first examined by the Steward in open court in the absence of her husband, and saith she is not compelled, but of her own free will consenteth to this surrender)
ALL that close or parcel of land lying and being in Beaurep'd called the field piece, lying in the Huttfall, also one other close or parcel of land in Beurep'd adjoining to the said field piece, called the Short Lands, now in the possession of Mr George Strutt, together with all ways, waters... etc...with all title, estate rights...etc... of them the said Isaac, Harry and Ann his wife.
TO the use and behoof of Jedediah Strutt of New Mills for his life and after his decease, to whom he shall appoint....etc.
Whereupon, at this court, at the instance of the said Jededaih Strutt these proclamations were made of the premises without ?claim and afterwards at the same court the Lord of the Manor by his Steward did ?? of all the premises unto Jedediah Strutt, in manner above specified by the rents, customes and ?? for the same due and of right accustomed for such estate and admittance thereto, and Jedediah Strutt then gave to the Lord of the Manor £10 for a fine, his fealty was respited? And so forth and he was thereupon admitted tenant.

At this Court is presented and found by the jury of homage that at a small court baron held at Duffield the 26th of February 1761, Henry Street, and Isaac Statham and Phoebe Statham his wife (the daughter of Henry Street)...surrendered...
All that close of land called the field in Hutfull; also parcel of land called the Short Lands with the appurtenances--- to the use of Hugh Bateman, his heirs and assigns for life, to make him tenant for the purpose of suffering a ?recovery of the same premises at the same court accordingly and afterwards at the same court John Wimoro?? The Recoverer, the said Hugh Bateman, Henry Street, Isaac Statham and Phoebe his wife surrendered the same premises to the use of the said Phoebe for life...
And the court finds that Phoebe is dead without having made any disposition of the said premises or any part thereof by her will or otherwise and that Harry Statham is her heir, the eldest son, and entitled to said copyhold premises and is of full age; the court proclaimed ...gave premises to Harry (Henry) and his heirs; Henry gave the Lord of the Manor £12 his fine was respited and he was admitted tenant.
(3) IOU on a piece of paper April 3rd 1788
One side - promise to pay £200 plus interest to Henry Statham after the date of September 6th 1788, signed Jedediah Strutt.
Other side - Belper, April 31st 1789, Received the contents of this note in full with interest, signed Henry Statham. A note at bottom reads: "this is part payment for Statham's Field Piece and Short Lands".

Conveyance, Arthur Strutt and others to Henry Lees, 43 Short Rows - Harry Lees, boot and shoe mender. Harry Lees lived in our house. Dated in the 1940's. Not much of interest but confirms the presence of the Lees in the shop, and that they moved to Short Row in the mid 1940s.

Of Belper Lawn, Gent. All messuages, tenements with land and appertenances in Hazelwood, now in the possn of John JACKSON, unto my nephew Joshua Statham, son of my late brother Joshua Statham. To my nephews Thomas, Samuel, both of Sheffield in York, Grocers, sons of Joshua, £100 each.
- To nephews John, Richard, Samuel and Joseph, sons of my brother Richard £100 each.
- To nieces Rebecca, Hannah £40 each.
- To Isaac, son of my nephew Joshua, £5

Three messuages and gardens, now in possn of Henry Street, and also a cottage with appertenances, and also a croft belonging to the above, for peppercorn rent. (in Belper Lane) - "Leave for a year" Henry Street to Richard Statham (undated?).
(Note: Richard Statham was dead in 1797 - he is the father of John. His wife = Ellen. Henry Street is the father of Phebe the wife of Isaac Statham of Shortlands.)

This relates to Statham's piece, as called, near the Dalley Farm on the road from Ashbourne to Belper. Six closes, freehold, in occupation of John Smith of Watergate. Owned by Wm Statham of Green Bank Turnditch (six fields and a barn) An Abstract of 1875 mentions him.
Willed by Ann Statham, all her property in Belper Lane End in occupation of Jonathan Smith, to William Statham. Belper Lane End adjoins Dalley Chevin. Jon Smith was tenant.

21 Aug 1828 The Will of Isaac Statham of Shottle, (held in Canterbury)
To his wife ANN, his property in Kniveton and lands at Duffield Bank; And Chevin Ward in possn of Jon SMITH. On the death of Ann, to his brother WILLIAM and his two friends William James Northedge James of Ireton (?) and John ADSETTS the younger of postern. (NB: The Adsetts were related to the Stathams. Ann Statham was nee Adsett, see below.)

John Statham of Belper Lawn, Gent. Refers to his "messuage and tenement with land/appertenances in Hazelwood" now in the possession of John Jackson, unto my nephew Joshua Statham, son of my late brother, John Statham.

24th April 1712. They swear that William Willott and Ann his wife & Wm Willott the younger, Gent, surrendered the half part of one close in Hazelwood (OxClose) Share Flatt and others to Joseph Statham and Mary his wife. Both died, therefore property goes to his only son Joseph.

Joseph Statham, a customary tenant, died before this court seized one parcel of land in the Hutfall Field containing three roods with all appertenances, which were surrendered to the use of the said Joseph Statham for life 5th December 1728.
